Skinker-DeBaliviere To Host State Fair September 7

Join us for our own State Fair!!

We know we live in a cool neighborhood. It’s like an oldfashioned village, but in an urban setting.

We have the true character of a village – people sitting on their front porches, kids playing together in the front yards, and home-grown meals to make and share.

It is time to celebrate our accomplishments with a neighborhood State Fair. Our Skinker-DeBaliviere State Fair will take place on Saturday, September 7 from 10am – 2pm. Come and show off your your very best tomato, flower, zucchini, or flower. Present your fabulous preserves, pickles, and pies. And of course – let’s see some chickens!! (In a cage, please.) The event will also host lectures and demonstrations to help promote our urban experience of Head, Hands, Heart, and Health – yes, 4-H! So how does this work? Well, all summer long, you work hard growing healthy plants and hearty animals, and in those months when you’re not weeding, watering, or feeding, you can show off your home-making skills by building a birdhouse, crocheting a quilt, or mastering your pickle-making.

Then at 9am on Saturday, September 7, you bring your very best home-made and home-grown items to Four Corners where there will be judges for each category: 1. Produce (fruits and vegetables) 2. Livestock (chickens only) 3. Flowers (single stem and arranged) 4. Canned and Preserved Food (pickles, jams, ) 5. Baked Goods (pies and cakes) 6. Needlecrafts (quilts, embroidery, crochet and knitted articles) 7. Handcrafts (wood, metal, models) Ribbons will be awarded for First, Second, and Third, and in each Category a “Best in Show”.

While the judges are doing their work, enjoy some time looking at the marvelous exhibition of items and attending a lecture on such diverse topics as raising backyard chickens and canning fruits and vegetables. Interested in being a judge or helping for a few hours in planning? Contact the SDCC council office at (314) 862-5122 or sdcc@skinkerdebaliviere.com to let us know!
