Gardeners love to share their knowledge, often gained by classes, books and hands-on experience.

In Skinker-DeBaliviere, we have some outstanding gardeners who are willing to share their wealth of gardening experience, and we are pleased to have them as a part of our 2013 Garden Workshop series at the McPherson Community Garden. Our first workshop this year, “How to start seedlings indoors”, was taught in tag-team style by Hitch Powell and Richard Lake.

They offered various ways to get an early start on the growing season and make successful transfer of plants from a window or growlight enviornment to the outdoors. Ligaya Figeuras taught some easy approaches in the vegetable garden for less work and more yield with her class, “Stress-Free Vegetable Gardening with Maximum Return.” Native-plant afficiando Leah Nguyen has a unique harvest in store for us with her class, “Wild and Weedy Springtime Edibles.” Discover many natural treats that go unnoticed and are waiting to be harvested, including some flowers and blossoms. Leah’s class will be on Saturday, April 13, at 11:30 a.m.

On May 11, at 12:30, in conjunction with the Electronics Recycling Day and the SD plant exchange, we will have a class taught by a team of WU biologists and geneticists. Arranged by Eric Hamilton, the speakers will explore where and how our present-day crops came to be.

All classes are free and open to all gardeners, neighbors and anyone who wishes to attend.

They take place at the McPherson Community Garden, 5943 McPherson (parking on DesPeres), with a rain location in the Art Studio at 5949 Kingsbury at Des Peres.

The classes are offered in conjunction with the Skinker-DeBaliviere workshop series and are a part of the Gateway Greening “Hub” garden project. Look for more information on the SD event calendar at www.skinkerDeBaliviere.com.
