Grace Pre-School Fosters Pre-Reading Skills

February 1980

Historical February 1980 report or notice. Original dates, prices and contacts describe the source period; current availability has not been established.

Most of us as parents and teachers are anxious that our children become good readers. Reading readiness is an agenda item at pre-schools and certainly in the home.

By making sure a child has a good vocabulary, you are preparing him for success as a reader. Reading all sorts of things to a child – books, posters, interesting items from the paper. the cereal boxes at the breakfast table, and letting the child see you read for pleasure– are good ways of encouraging pre-reading skills.

As you do this, you share the magic of reading with the child and make him aware that reading is fun and useful. He becomes eager and excited about learning to read himself.

Another method of paving the way for successful reading is, to broaden the child’s experiences. Grace Pre-School plans many varied field trips. A child who has been to the riverfront, the zoo, a park, an airport. a farm, art museum and other stimulating places will have a richer oral and comprehensive vocabulary. Family vacations and travel supply additional new words. The more words a child knows and can use, the easier it will be for him to unlock the secret of reading. These are the best ways to “teach” your child to read. Help him to be ready to learn and when the time comes, there will be no stopping him.
