Congratulations to happy grandparents Rich and Venita Lake of the 5800 block of Waterman. Reese Osgood Smith was born on November 3, 7 lbs., 10 oz. Reese and big Sister Georgia live with their proud parents, Melissa and Marc Smith, in Washington, D.C.
All our best wishes go out to Laure Porterfield, Executive Dir-ector of the Skinker-DeBaliviere Community Council, who has been battling a variety of ailments.
She has been in St. Mary’s Rehab.
Her hard-working assistant Juanita Wood has recently been sidelined by surgery as well.
We hope all is going well for both Laure and Juanita. Marj Weir of the 6100 block of Westminster is successfully recuperating from hip replacement surgery.
Her right has been fixed and her left is scheduled soon.
She joins our coeditor Lana Stein in having titanium parts necessitating individual searches every time an airport is visited.
Another successful police and firefighters’ holiday lunch buffet was held on December 15, 2005. Longtime SDCC board member Ruth Johnson and her committee handled the many volunteer food contributions, as well as greeting and welcoming all the law enforcement and fire department personnel who come each year to the holiday meal.
This “Thank you” is sponsored each year by SDCC.
We are sorry to learn that Dorothy Santen, wife of Art Santen, of the 6100 block of McPherson, passed away.
The Santens have been mainstays of the Skinker-DeBaliviere Neighborhood for the past four decades, and while Art delivered the TIMES and organized Halloween, “Dottie,” as she was known, served St. Roch Church. Our sympathy to Art and their children.
Another longtime neighborhood family is mourning, as Charles Fleener of the 6300 block of Waterman in Parkview passed away suddenly while out of town. Dr. Fleener was a history professor at St. Louis University for 39 years. Our condolences to his wife Mary and their children. Welcome to new neighbors on the 5900 block of DeGiverville, Carrie Keller and Chakib Mouslim. We’ve noticed that the holiday lull in house sales seems to be over, as there are fewer and fewer for sale signs lingering in the neighborhood. One new sign is promising, though, as the “Forest Park Condominiums,” formerly Rosedale Square, has dumpsters and signs of construction. Reminds me of our old Skinker-DeBaliviere Neighborhood poster, still on view at the SDCC office, which advertised, “We’re Close!” to highlight our ambiance and location at once. Still true! News from Berlin – where our neighbors from the 6000 block of Westminster are staying this year. Nicole Blumner and Warren Rosenblum and daughter Eve are having an interesting and educational year in Europe, and urban planner Nicole writes that she will have a report published by the German Institute for Urban Studies in the spring, comparing what local governments are doing to encourage temporary use of vacant property. Husband Warren, a professor at Webster University here in St. Louis when he’s not on sabbatical, recently made the Post-Dispatch, which wrote of the innovative exhibit he organized with students working with staff at the Old Courthouse.
The exhibit on St. Louis-area examples of the loss of civil liberties is on display at the Old Courthouse. Your news is important to your neighbors.
