Editor’s Column

May 1972

With the local papers and national magazines filled with articles on the inefficiency, waste and corruption that have wasted billions aimed for helping poverty stricken people and cities, it seems appalling that the Skinker-DeBaliviere Youth Council proposal discussed in this issue has to go scrounging around for funds.

Here is a well thought out idea that aims to start up a self-sustaining program IF it can get capital to start on. Every kid out looking for a job knows no one wants to hire him unless he’s had a job before, and how does he get the first job? Our young people want to provide themselves with work and management experience. If no official funds are available can’t some foundation or combination of business men give the youngsters an opportunity to make it on their own?

In connection with the letter on traffic pollution in Forest Park may we add that there is something insulting to the concept of law and justice when policemen on scooters and horseback chase little children off Art Hill. Priorities would be in much better order if someone moved the fairway, or even if we had the only 17 hole golf course in the country! This is surprising St. Louis. remember?

The Editors, on behalf of many neighborhood residents who may not have an opportunity to do so personally, want to thank Dr. and Mrs. Ramsey for their efforts here and to wish them every happiness in their new assignment.
