Second location with retail storefront will provide growth opportunities for employees and the social enterprise ST. LOUIS, MO (January 20, 2026) – Bridge Bread Bakery, a nonprofit social enterprise focused on restorative employment, will open a second location at 616 N. Skinker Blvd., on the northeast corner of Skinker and Delmar boulevards on Jan. 31. Founded in 2011, Bridge Bread has been a staple on Cherokee Street for more than a decade, providing employment, job training and housing assistance to people experiencing homelessness.

The second location will allow the nonprofit to further support its bakers through instruction in advanced artisanal baking skills, management training and opportunities for wage growth. “The Loop creates a clear next step for our bakers,” said Teddy Key, bakery manager. “People can start at Cherokee Street, gain stability, and then come here to advance their skills and work on more complex, artisan baked goods like Japanese Milk Bread and Sourdough Craft Bagels, including our French Onion Soup Bagel.” The new bakery will occupy three adjacent storefronts at 616 Skinker Blvd. and marks the return of a retail storefront for Bridge Bread, which stopped retail service at its Cherokee location during the pandemic.

The Loop bakery will rely heavily on foot traffic, selling baked goods made fresh daily. “Opening in The Loop is about more than expanding our bakery—it’s about expanding opportunity,” said Board Chair Jessica BaileyWheaton. “Every product sold at this location helps someone without safe and stable housing become a valued, contributing member of our community through meaningful work. We’re excited to deepen our roots in St. Louis and demonstrate the transformative power of restorative employment.” “The Loop bakery represents the first step in a planned five-year expansion for Bridge Bread,” said Mike Heeley, managing director. “As demand for our products continues to grow, this location allows us to expand purposefully—adding new retail outlets, increasing production capacity, and most importantly, creating additional jobs and advancement opportunities to the unhoused population in St. Louis.” The Bridge Bread team are hopeful this new location will become a destination for the neighborhood’s residents and visitors alike.

The bakery will offer coffee and bottled beverages along with sweet and savory baked goods in a grab-n-go style setting, perfect for the area’s high population of Washington University students. Bridge Bread Bakery in the Loop will be open Wednesday through Friday 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturdays 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The grand opening and ribbon cutting will take place at 616 Skinker Blvd. on Jan. 31 at 1 p.m. Measuring Community Impact Every $25 in sales provides an hour’s worth of labor for Bridge Bread bakers. “Opening this bakery is going to help us hire several more unhoused people from the St. Louis area and put them on a path to stability and economic mobility,” said Heeley. About Bridge Bread Bakery Bridge Bread Bakery, founded in 2011 by Fred and Sharon Domke, is St. Louis’ only non-profit social enterprise that empowers individuals experiencing homelessness by providing meaningful work, marketable baking skills, and housing assistance, helping them become self-sufficient community members.
