Resident artist Bill Christman holds periodic showings at 6010 Kingsbury.

On October 7, a new exhibit will open featuring the work of weaver Denise Mandel.

She has been a weaver for over 37 years, creating rugs and tapestries.

She uses West-faced weaving.

Her work has been in galleries, art fairs, and craft shows.

In the last decade, she has also done home shows. Four years ago, her work was shown in Elsah, Illinois.

Her work can range from fine tapestries to contemporary Southwest images.

She had lived for awhile in New Mexico.

Her show at the Christman gallery will contain clothing, scarves and pillows.

There will be 16 larger hangings.

She had carried out several pieces for the St. Louis Cathedral and these will be on display.

She also wove a display for Pope John Paul II’s 1999 St. Louis visit and a facsimile will also be displayed. Ms. Mandel has taught weaving at Craft Alliance for 27 years.

She will have some of her students’ work available on line at this showing.

There will also be 2-3 looms with work in progress available to be viewed. Mandel is preparing two special tapestries for auction with proceeds designed to help organizations that work with animals. One will have cats, dogs and horses depicted and part of the proceeds will go to the Humane Society.

The second is a homage to a recently deceased cat named Boots. Part of the proceeds from this sale will go to a local animal shelter. Mandel grew up in Spanish Lake and lives in the family home.

There is a loom in every room.

She studied at the Kansas City Art Institute and then went to Santa Fe to study with the renowned Alice Parrott.

The style of the Navaho became part of her.

This exhibit will close on October 29.
