Paul Winter receives Silver Beaver recognition.

Historical September–October 2016 article. Dates, prices, services and contacts describe the source period; current availability has not been established.

First I have to ask…where in the world did summer go?

It seems I was just writing a column for the May issue with expectations for a long and enjoyable summer. Instead, I blinked, and yes, had some fun, but when I opened my eyes summer was over. So, I guess it is time to catch up on our News of Neighbors. Paul Winter has served since 2007 as the Scoutmaster of St. Roch Boy Scout Troop 98 and has also served in many council positions throughout the years.

In June, his outstanding service to the troop and to the Grand Towers District was recognized. Paul was awarded the Silver Beaver Award, which recognizes scouters of exceptional character who have provided distinguished service within a council. Paul grew up in Parkview on the 6300 block of Waterman and attended grade school at St. Roch, participating in scouting at St. Roch where he earned his Eagle Scout ranking.

While serving as Scoutmaster he also serves as Cub Scout/Boy Scout advancement workshops coordinator, as district camping chairman, on the district training staff, and as the advisor for the district camporees.

He has earned the District Award of Merit, Ad Altari Dei religious award, and Order of the Arrow Vigil Honor. Congratulations to Paul and thank you for your continued service to St. Roch Troop 98 and the Grand Towers District. Many neighbors are aware of a house on the 5800 block of DeGiverville that became known as “The Phoenix”.

The home sat as a vacant burned out shell for many years until Eric Trudo, of the 5900 block of DeGiverville, decided to do something about it. Eric was one of the firemen who fought the original fire at the house but more importantly he has been the driving force behind bringing the home back to (or beyond) it’s original glory.

The result is a beautifully restored and completely updated and renovated home that sold to new owners in June and has been a boost to that part of the neighborhood by replacing an eyesore with a magnificent home. Eric’s work was recognized on May 19th at the Majorette when he received a “Most Enhanced Award” from the Landmarks Association of St. Louis.

The partnership for the project included the Skinker DeBaliviere Community Housing Corporation as financier and developer and Design Alliance as architect. Congratulations Eric on your recognition and on a job well done!

We look forward to seeing another project from you. Not to be outdone by dad, Justin Trudo earned an award of his own hard work and creative efforts.

The talented student received the presidents purchase award for the best art exhibit for 2016 at Southwest Illinois College. Congratulations Justin! Talent runs in the family. Creativity seems to flow in many families in our neighborhood. Monica Hammond, the daughter of Linda Nodiff and step daughter of Marvin Nodiff lives in the Park Slope Neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York and is an artist and comedian. Hammond started creating coloring books for grown ups at the end of 2015. Many of the books are based on different themes including pop culture, dog selfies, and presidential candidates.

The coloring books have even played part in grown up “coloring nights”. Congrats to Monica on her success! Welcome to the world Fritzy! Catching up on some news from last fall is the wonderful news that Fritz Faerber and Britt Lopez along with big brother Alex welcomed baby brother Fritz aka “Fritzy” on October 24, 2015.

The Faerber/Lopez family lives on the 6100 of Washington. Unfortunately we also have some very sad news we have to share this issue. Tom and Sharon McPherron announced the death on May 31st of their daughter Shane (Molly) McPherron. Molly was born in 1970 and spent her childhood with her family on the 6100 block of Kingsbury. Shane attended Grace Preschool, Forsyth, Visitation and St. Roch.

She graduated from Rosati-Kain High School in 1988 and attended Canisius College in Buffalo, New York, on a basketball scholarship.

We send our deepest sympathies to the entire McPherron family.

After serving for seven years as State Senator of the 4th District of Missouri serving St. Louis City and St. Louis County, Joe Keaveny has stepped down from the position and has been named a Workers’ Compensation Administrative Law Judge in St. Louis. Keaveny, a Parkview resident, was appointed to the position by Governor Jay Nixon. Congratulations Joe! Shocking news this summer came about our neighbor Seth Carlin also of the 6100 block of Kingsbury.

While in France with his wife Maryse Carlin, Carlin passed away following a swimming accident.

A native of East Orange, N.J., Carlin began playing piano at age 6 and made his public debut three years later on New York public radio station WNYC. Carlin’s education in the arts continued throughout his life and at Harvard where he majored in music (after first starting out in physics) and graduated in 1969.

It is there that he met his wife, fellow pianist, Maryse.

He earned his masters at the Julliard school and taught at several schools before joining Washington University as the director of the piano program in 1979. Carlin’s musical resume is an impressive who’s who of conductors he performed as a soloist for and also his performances with the St. Louis Symphony and Washington University. Our deepest condolences go out to his wife, and his daughter Tova and son Daniel for their loss. Linda and Emily Cross will exhibit their artwork at Andy’s studio on Friday, September 30 from 6-9pm.

The studio, at the northeast corner of Kingsbury and Des Peres, will reveal Linda’s photographs and Emily’s paper cutouts.
