Senator Joe Keaveny, who has been State Senator for the past six years, will be resigning before his final term expires.
He is under consideration by Gov. Nixon for nomination as an administrative judge in the Missouri Department of Labor.
There is a nomination process that Keaveny must go through and we will learn more in the coming weeks. Keaveny has served ably as the minority floor leader.
He says that, despite the Democrats’ minority status in the Missouri Legislature, he has enjoyed being senator and looks forward to new challenges. Keaveny fought for local control of our police, to maintain workers’ collective rights, and to affirm equal protection under the law for all citizens.
It was difficult to be in such a small minority but he tried to work across the aisle.
He also raised questions about the death penalty.
We have also learned that the longtime alderman of the 28th ward, Lyda Krewson, is considering seeking the mayor’s office.
The election will be in March 2017. Mayor Slay has decided not to seek another term.
The times may be a changing.
