Historical Summer 2015 article. Dates, prices, services and contacts describe the source period; current availability has not been established.

A recent situation and consequent conversations have shown there is some confusion regarding bulk trash pick up in our neighborhood.

Here is a brief overview, with some surprising, at least to this writer, facts. When: In our area, bulk trash pick up is the week of the first Monday of the month.

The Refuse Division may be pick up as early as 8 a.m. of that week but it may not be until the end of the week.

The city’s web site states that items should be out by 6 a.m. of that first day, but a city official suggested the night before to make certain.

The Refuse Division only goes down the alley once during the week. Items should not be put out before that time. What: Three items per household.

These may include furniture, sticks and branches which must be bundled, BOAT-E items (these are things which cannot be put in trash dumpsters): Batteries — not household, Oil (motor), Appliances (doors removed from refrigerators), Tires and Electronics.

If a household has more items, there are two Transfer Stations (aka dump), which can be used once a month per household. Go to the City’s Web site for more information. Where: Do NOT place the items next to the dumpsters!

This was news to me.

The three items should be placed behind your house.

If the fence comes directly to the alley, the items should still be placed there, being certain that the alley is not blocked.

A staff member from the Refuse Division told me that if the items are next to the dumpster, there would be a good chance that the dumpster would not be emptied. Do not put things behind a neighbor’s house.

Another note: Contractors and homeowners should not use dumpsters for rehab refuse.

There have been times when dumpsters have been over loaded with demolition materials.
