On Thursday, April 24th experience needed” reading of Shakespeare’s King Lear.
The event was part of Shake38, a celebration of Shakespeare’s 38 plays presented by 38 groups at 38 different locations that is sponsored by the Shakespeare Festival of St. Louis.
Most of those in the SDCC group have never been drama majors or actors but everyone enjoyed picking a part from a hat then reading (very dramatically!!!) that character’s lines. Many in the group came from our neighborhood but we had several people from other areas who heard about the reading and wanted to participate including our State Rep, Karla May, and our youngest Shakespeare lover – the 5 month old daughter of one of our cast!
She did not have a speaking part this year but who knows what will happen in 2015!
After the performance, cake, in honor of Shakespeare’s 450th congratulated each other on a stellar performance. None of us have plans to quit our day jobs yet we might be persuaded to participate again next year.
If so, we hope that additional friends and neighbors will want to join the “Not Quite Ready for Prime Time” Thespians, a group of friends and neighbors gathered for a “come-asyou-are,” “no birthday, was enjoyed by all.”

Archival transcription note: Printed opening and closing lines are internally misordered: experience needed reading starts while come-as-you-are no birthday fragment appears at end. Full source text preserved with explicit note rather than reconstructing missing sentence.
