Historical November–December 2009 article. Dates, prices, services and contacts describe the source period; current availability has not been established.
After 36 years in our neighborhood, Neal Shapiro and Original Cast Lighting are moving to much more spacious quarters in Westport. Shapiro is excited about the opportunity for his firm but also sad to leave an area that he had worked in and worked for. Because he will continue to own properties here, he intends to be in touch on a frequent basis.
He will be looking for the best possible uses for his properties, located on both sides of 61xx Delmar.
In 1973, Neal and his wife Linda opened an antique business on Skinker between Waterman and McPherson.
His business moved to its Delmar location in 1978.
The business evolved to lighting and commercial interior design. OCL did work for Anheuser-Busch, McDonalds, and work overseas.
They reproduced antique bar fixtures and lighting and eventually settled on lighting. Linda Shapiro has contributed a great deal to the company.
She is also a highly recognized artist, a metalsmith. OCL’s Delmar home had originally been a tire place.
The lighting company has expanded to become a national business from its humble beginnings on Delmar. Shapiro always enjoyed being here and will continue to be active.
There is some interest in developing both his properties. Housing with retail on the first floor could be a possibility on the north side (on the site of the old Yellow Cab Co.), while a restaurant or deli might find a home on the south side of Delmar in the current OCL building. Oct. 22 or 23 will be the day they start moving to Westport. It’s a success story with a touch of bittersweet.
