5838 Waterman, across the street, has the same basic house plan, but owners Doug and Andrea Powell have made many changes.
While the entry, stairs, living room, dining room and adjacent sun room retain the original design, the kitchen and upstairs master bedroom have been extensively reworked.
The ceiling of the master bedroom suite has been vaulted and the adjoining bedroom has been transformed into a walkin closet and a large bath.
Another bedroom serves as Andrea’s office, looking out onto the street. Here, too, the built-in linen storage in the hallway is original. Expanding in all directions, the basement is fully finished as a recreation area and the back yard has an outdoor kitchen and patio area.
The new garage, dubbed the Garage-Mahal, is designed to hold up to six cars, accomplished by lifts, and has a shop area and its own half bath.
There are other houses on the 5900 and 5800 blocks of Waterman built in a similar style.
There are thirteen built in 1915 and 1916 that were designed by the same architect, J. L. Wees, AIA.
