Historical November–December 2002 article. Dates, prices, services and contacts describe the source period; current availability has not been established.

Millions of cellular phones and computers are discarded annually. Many electronic items contain hazardous materials.

The average computer monitor or television tube contains up to eight pounds of lead.

These hazardous materials do not present a problem when contained in working equipment, they can be harmful to humans or the environment if disposed of improperly, put in a landfill, or incinerated. Best Buy has become involved in collecting electronics with the goal of ensuring that their customers have access to an electronics recycling collection event at least once a year.

This will be a 2-day event and consumers can bring in any old or unwanted small electronics of any brand or type.

Most electronic items will be collected and recycled at no charge.

However, due to the high cost of processing leaded glass contained in cathode ray tubes, here will be a handling fee of $10 per computer monitor and $15 per television. City residents can also recycle electronics at Gunter Electronics, 5080 Delmar and Web Innovations & Technology Services. 2801 Meramec. Gunter and Web may have pick up service depending on quantity to be recycled and your location. For more details, contact the City Refuse Division Recycling Office at 353-8877.
