The Skinker-DeBaliviere neighborhood gardeners were recognized with many awards this year at the Gateway Greening 2002 Urban Garden Awards Luncheon. Gateway Greening is a non-profit organization which sponsors over 150 community gardens throughout St. Louis.

In our neighborhood, the Block Unit 1035 Community Garden (5800 Westminster) and the McPherson Community Garden (5900 McPherson), the Laurel/Waterman Triangle Park, Four Corners, and the Playground, are all recipients of the plants and guidance offered by Gateway Greening. At the Urban Garden Awards this past June, “Outstanding Raised Bed” awards were given to Cathajane Gamble of the McPherson Garden, and Holly McCoy of the Block Unit 1035 Community Garden. “Individual awards”, gardeners recognized for their contributions and efforts this year, went to Mary Brown and Ronie Haliburton of the Block Unit 1035 garden, and also to Betty Eliot, Annie Polk, and Heather Raner, of the McPherson Garden.

In the “Established Community Garden” category, the Block Unit 1035 Garden, under the leadership of Jesse Brown, was awarded 4th place, and the McPherson Community Garden, led by Andy Cross, tied for 3rd place with the Syracuse Garden of University City. Our neighborhood’s two community gardens and their gardeners continue to excel in these Urban Garden Awards year after year. Congratulations to all the green thumbs!
