Historical Fall 2001 article. Dates, prices, services and contacts describe the source period; current availability has not been established.

Dear Editor, I wanted to write a brief note to reflect on my recent mid-August visit to the old ‘hood.

While I’ve been gone from St. Louis for 4 years now, my return visits are always harried and usually in the winter it seems. Thus, it was nice to be there when the weather was warm, the kids were out, and the trees and gardens were all filled out.

I must say the old place looks great!! There’s been much controversy of late over the Metrolink and other matters, but folks need to remind themselves of all the good things the ‘hood has accomplished. So many buildings have been improved and have new signs of life. So many new neighbors are involved that I hardly recognized most of the names in the “TIMES” reprinting of the SCCC minutes. So much is improving and revitalizing on Delmar. It’s hard to see how much changes when you’re there everyday, but take it from someone who wishes she were, but isn’t–the place is changing dramatically for the better and will just keep doing so. There’s lots of old and new energy that will keep things on the upswing.

As one of my favorite SDCC neighbors used to say, “don’t let the naysayers get you down!” Enjoy your success and keep up the good work! Your old neighbor, Catherine Forslund Rockford, IL Editor’s Note: Catherine Forslund was President of the Skinker-DeBaliviere Community Council a decade ago and led a planning effort which stimulated the work of the many active committees operating today in the neighborhood, including the Delmar Commercial Committee. Husband Roy Roncal, a professional photographer, was President of the West End Arts Council for many years and participated in many other community activities. Since receiving her PhD, Catherine has become an academic, and she and Roy have recently purchased a home in Rockford, Illinois, where Catherine is a History Professor at Rockford College.
