While many of Skinker DeBaliviere’s residents have been relaxing this summer, the Commercial District Planning Committee (CDPC) has been busy finalizing plans to make improvements to the commercial district on Delmar, from City Limits to DeBaliviere.

The next few months will see great changes along this strip of Delmar. Street trees will be planted. Awnings will be installed on many of the businesses. Sidewalks will be repaired and other physical improvements made. Twenty-three businesses have applied for funds through CDPC’s 50/50 Matching Grant Program.

The majority of these grants will be used to help these businesses install awnings which will greatly Improve the appearance of the buildings.

The awnings will also provide a sense of continuity since they will all be of a similar style and limited number of colors.

These awnings have been approved by Heritage and Urban Design and will not detract from the historic character of the buildings.

The following businesses have applied for and received tentative approval for grants for the following items: AWNINGS Palomino Lounge Robertson’s Appliance Unique Art Lace Pawn Masters Boulevard Cleaners Dobbs Tires Wright’s Auto Parts Glass Doctor Johnson Realty Building at Skinker/Delmar Happy Taco Art Directions Sunshine Academy Colonial Rug Gingiss Formal Wear WINDOWS John Bordeaux’s Building 5800 Delmar Skinker Radiant Products Sunshine Academy FENCE, LIGHTING Happy Taco GARAGE DOOR Art Directions Trees, or the lack thereof, are a major issue for the Delmar Wabash Link. CDPC has offered to plant trees along Delmar in front of any business which requests it. Approximately seventy trees will arrive in late fall.

These trees will be of the Autumn Purple Ash variety. Local artists, students, and residents have been invited through letters and flyers posted in the neighborhood and at local schools and institutions, to enter a Banner Design Contest. Banners are to reflect the revitalization of the Delmar Wabash Link and are to incorporate concepts such as the character and history of the neighborhood, the Wabash Station, and the upcoming Metro-Link station.

The winning design will be used on approximately 44 banners which will be installed along Delmar in late September.

The CDPC has also been working to establish a Business Association consisting of the owners or managers of Delmar businesses.

This association will market and promote the Delmar Wabash Link business area.

It will pursue long term goals of redevelopment and will raise funds to do so.

The goal of these efforts is the development of the Delmar Wabash Link Business District.

The CDPC’s endeavors will make Delmar more attractive and accessible to patrons. Like the nearby University City Loop, this area has great potential for growth and renewal.

The steps taken this fall will be the first in this direction.
