Historical April 1990 report or notice. Original dates, prices and contacts describe the source period; current availability has not been established.
Closed for inventory—the familiar sign will go up on the door of the Missouri Historical Society’s Library and Archives the first of April.
The library serves teachers, students, journalists, writers, researchers and historians from the St. Louis area and from all over the United States free of charge. Located in the upper level of the east wing of the Jefferson Memorial Building in Forest Park, it is normally open Tuesday through Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Behind the closed doors a task force of librarians teamed with part-time clerks will be checking more than 120,000 volumes currently stored on the shelves.
The object of the three month operation is to determine the allocation of shelf space in the new library, currently under construction in the former United Hebrew Temple at 225 S. Skinker, west of Forest Park.
The new facility will be open for use in early 1992. “We regret the inconvenience this will cause our researchers;’ said Stephanie Klein, technical services librarian at the Missouri Historical Society. “Their number has increased significantly this year, and we look forward to resuming service at the Jefferson Memorial Building on July 5.
The ultimate result of the inventory will be a better knowledge of the collections and better service to those who use this rich source for their research!’
