Original drawing of a young bicyclist with a dog.

Have you ever seen a twenty-eightyear-old with training wheels on her bike. I considered it when I finally got my first “two-wheeler.” As an automobile driver for quite awhile before becoming a bicyclist, I had observed a fair number of potential accidents. Now, as a somewhat more experienced bicyclist, I see the need for more bike training, both for auto drivers and bike riders. An overwhelming number of bike accidents involve collision with an automobile. Basically, common sense and courtesy are the best guidelines for both driver and rider. Here is a bicycle safety code from the Auto Club of Missouri (AAA) which should be impressed on all riders. 1. Do not carry passengers. 2. Always observe traffic regulations and stop signs. 3. Use hand signals to indicate turning and stopping. 4. Ride single file. 5. Do not ride from between parked cars. 6. Keep to the right side of the road. 7. Keep both hands on the handlebars. 8. Keep brakes in good condition. 9. Have proper equipment for night riding. 10. Do not speed in busy sections. 11. Avoid crowds. 12. Give right-of-way to pedestrains and automobiles. 13. Do not ride when tired or ill. 14. Avoid stunt riding, racing, and zigzagging in traffic. 15. Do not “hitch” rides. 16. Slow down, look and listen at all intersections and driveways. 17. Make bicycle repairs off the road. 18. Dismount and walk across heavy traffic. 19. Make sure bike is in safe operating condition. 20. Always ride carefully. And for all of you auto drivers – don’t crowd riders to the curb — and don’t honk when you see me — Wave!
