For several months police officers have been patrolling on foot as part of a pilot program. The program has been successful and as a result, said Captain Walsh, in charge of the “Overtime Foot Patrol,” the department expects that federal funds will be granted to expand the program. The expected one million dollars will allow the department to triple the number of foot patrols for an 8-month period. Presently in the 7th District four patrols operate on week nights between 6 p.m. and 2 a.m. and six patrols work on weekends during those hours.

Additional officers patrol on foot in the 7th District, some on regular beats and others on varying assignments. Regular walking patrols are maintained on DeBaliviere and Delmar. Two scooters and six tri-cars operate daily within the district. According to the department the response from business people to these patrols has been very enthusiastic.
