2005 Breakfast Garden Tour

September 2005

The 7th Annual 2005 Breakfast Garden Tour focused on some of the more recently developed homes in our neighborhood.

The Nina Place townhomes provided three creative and beautiful gardens. Other gorgeous gardens were discovered in the Kingsbury Square area. Many tour-goers stated they didn’t know this beautiful place was even here!

The Nina Place Townhomes were designed to offer something a little different, somewhere between condos and big homes.

The residents are friends through their homeowners association and by design, each set of homes has a triangular corner planting area. Here, Gary and Janice Bierman relax by their gorgeous pond and garden. Gary’s company, Town and Country Homes, developed these new homes a couple of years ago. Hundreds of neighbors have been just a few feet away from this yard, having no idea of the slice of paradise just beyond that garageÖWhat better compliment can be made to a neighborhood than when the builder of a project moves into one of the houses he has constructed.

The yard of Willie and Rogerine Kinds on the 5900 block of DeGiverville is for “good old fashioned family picnics and summer fun times with friends.

The Kinds built the trellis and fence, decorated with keepsakes and gifts, the patio of lovely old pavers, and a new fence. Their charming garden includes a crab apple tree which a first-cousin won in an essay contest about trees some 35 years ago. And then there’s the bike: Rogerine tells the story of the young girl who took a very short bike ride.

She rode her bicycle down the back yard path and right out of the gate into the alley.

When she got to the alley, a car was there and she smacked into it.

It was a police car!

She was so afraid that she would be arrested and the police would take her car away.

When she grew older, her mom reminded her to come and take her bike from the backyard, but she was busy with other things now, and the bike remained there. So Rogerine turned the bike into a planter, part of their memorable garden.

The Kinds have been active in the neighborhood for four decades, and it was a treat to have their yard on the Breakfast Garden Tour.

The tour also included the Block Unit 1035 Garden, which has really developed over the last seven years.

The center circle garden is being redesigned with a new trellis. Garden leaders Jesse and Mary Brown of the 5900 block of DeGiverville help keep it a wonderful spot. Many of our neighbors may not have been through Kingsbury Square because it is a gated community, therefore, “just passing through” doesn’t happen much unless one is visiting friends. Dan and Molly Rater, who is seen here with daughter Mary, live on the 5700 block of Westminster. Their small front yard, like many others, is tastefully filled with plantings, bringing the area alive with color. Bringing neighbors together and discovering new parts of our neighborhood are two of the goals of the “Annual Breakfast Garden Tour.” Thank you to all who participated.
