Recently, New Cote Brilliante Church of God launched an ambitious new program targeted to senior citizens.
The dedication of a new Senior Citizen Center, which was attended by Alderman Lyda Krewson and other church and community leaders on Tuesday, December 3rd, launched the Merry Makers group as a special program at New Cote Brilliante.
The Merry Makers meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6199 Washington Avenue from 8:30 a.m. til 2:00 p.m.
On days when there is snow, ice or severe cold the program is cancelled. Thus far, however, program offerings have included planned group projects, special events, special guests, field trips, personal care classes, computer classes, games, a sewing circle, music, tapes and films, the sharing of ideas and, especially, conversation. Lunch is also provided as part of the program. Coordinated by Mattie L. Irons, the program seeks to provide organized activities that stimulate, inspire, motivate and encourage older adults.
It is also the program’s intent to promote independence among its members.
They share an array of activities designed to enhance their talents and skills as well as to boost their self-esteem, thus enhancing individual member’s sense of dignity and self-respect. Facilities at New Cote Briliante are safe and easily accessible for seniors, including handrails on stairs and an elevator.
The area where the Merry Makers meet is clean, and the environment is bright and creative.
All seniors are welcome to participate in the Merry Makers, regardless of church affiliation.
The program is offered free of charge. For more details contact Mattie Irons at 727-3550.
