A strong storm on a late August afternoon disabled the computer of the Times’ production manager and delayed the appearance of this issue_ Although armed with a more than adequate surge protector, lightning struck the computer through the telephone line connecting its modem to the Internet. Luckily, the machine was successfully repaired but there is a lesson here for all of us with telephone hook-ups.
