Editor’s Notebook — Finding A Home Here

September 1997

Historical September 1997 article. Dates, prices, services and contacts describe the source period; current availability has not been established.

It sometimes seems like yesterday that I arrived in St. Louis to take a job at UMSL. At the same time, it feels like I have been here forever.

I have been most fortunate to really find a home here, in the city and in our neighborhood.

In the late fall of 1987, I followed a colleague’s advice and went to City Hall to interview Dan McGuire as part of a research project I was pursuing. Alderman McGuire provided considerable guidance to the subject at hand and a number of names of others I ought to speak with.

Most important, he told me about the impending Nina Place development and said I should consider buying there.

I brushed off the idea at the time, but when display models opened I was there.

In the interim, I had learned a great deal about the neighborhood from other residents and from copies of the Times.

In need of roots and growing increasing fond of the city, I purchased a unit and moved in a little over 8 years ago.

It was a most fortuitous move for me.

The friendships forged amidst community activity are very special ones.

The opportunity to work with others to better a fine neighborhood is a blessing. Getting involved allows us all to become part of this special community.

We at the Times welcome any and all who would like to help with the newspaper.

We need writers and deliverers particularly.

My own work in urban politics has shown me few neighborhoods as diverse or as stable as ours.

We wish to celebrate that specialness at our upcoming party (Oct. 18) and also thank Dan for all his efforts.

I want to thank him for first telling me about Skinker DeBaliviere and steering me to a home in this neighborhood.
