Historical October 1987 report or notice. Original dates, prices and contacts describe the source period; current availability has not been established.

28th Ward Democratic Headquarters was alive with the sound of children on August 29th when Kingsbury Kiosk had its party for the summer reading club for reading a minimum of 15 books during the summer.

We are grateful to McDonald’s as well as the mothers for refreshments and to the 28th Ward for its hospitality. Harold Russell, a wonderful magician, was the hit of the day. Receiving certificates were Cedric and Jermell Jackson, Farah “Kizzy” Lunceford, Jade Payne, Sam Christman, Rebecca and Bethany Ravens, Secorie Henderson, Newt Newton, Kathleen Carrigan, David Holler, Katherine and Mary Wiltenberg, Willa Lutjens, Daniel and Margaret Flynn, Ozell Hicks, Erica Webb, Hassan and Ali-Shahriary, Baby Ray and Tanya Webber, and Carman Feron Ford, Jr. Three children, Rebecca and Bethany Havens and Meg Flynn each read 75 books and were invited to a grand party at Central Library downtown. Rose Flynn held the storytelling on the grass Saturday, September 3 with the theme Art. Such questions as “How many paintings do you paint each day,” were answered by neighborhood artist Marlon Fields.

His droll sense of humor was enjoyed by all. October 3, at 11 will be next storytelling on the grass with Rose Flynn and guest, a police officer. Morris Bynum and Pepper Mash tied in the pet picture contest. You may remember Morris, the big orange alley cat who used to beg food outside the Kiosk daily. Morris received a “little operation” and shots gratis from Dr. Brammier and became the pet of Beth Bynum and now he will go no further than the front lawn. (Perhaps he fears losing his happy home where he never had it so good). Pepper is a dalmation dog belonging to New City School teacher Carla Mash. Carla has enjoyed dressing Pepper up in various funny outfits and putting hats on her and cigars or American flags in her mouth and taking pictures.

When Carla comes to the library she tells Pepper to sit outside and that is what Pepper does. Animals with honorable mention include the following cats: Frisky and Mama Wiltenberg, Louise Flynn, Octopussy Shickman, Pumpkin Repetto and her babies. Among the dogs with honorable mention were Maggie Schoemehl, Toby Smith and Floyd Flynn.

I was saddened to see that Butch Christman got no votes at all.

A black bunny, Louie Fox, was a favorite in the contest in his category.

Please come to Kiosk and fetch your pet pictures.
