The Gondoliers, set in Venice in 1750, is vintage Gilbert & Sullivan, brimming with amorous foibles, mistaken identities, and goodnatured satire.
The operetta is filled with enchanting songs both comic and sentimental. Gilbert’s arch wit and Sullivan’s beautiful melodies shine throughout this delightful tale of Spanish gentry Italian peasant girls, and, of course, handsome Venetian gondolieri. Opera Theatre’s Artistic Director, Britishborn Colin Graham will stage the production. Mr. Graham has directed more than twenty Opera Theatre productions, including previous holiday presentations of H. M. S. Pinafore (1981), The Pirates of Penzance (1982), ‘and The Mikado (1984).
His work has also been seen at the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera, Santa Fe Opera, and many other leading international houses.
The Gondoliers is generously sponsored in part by the Southwestern Bell Foundation with additional support from The Edward Chase Garvey Memorial Trust. – Opera Theatre of Saint Louis is a funded member of the Arts and Educational Council of Greater St. Louis, and receives financial assistance from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency; the Missouri Arts Council, a state agency; and the Regional Arts Commission.
