Education

From Hamilton School

June 1978

The Hamilton School P.T.O. held a communications workshop May 4. Mr. Horace Mitchell, from Washington University spoke. Mr. Mitchell discussed with parents and teachers the problems we encounter in communicating with our children and each other. Guidelines were established in order to improve our relationships. It was a worthwhile experience for all. The evening also included a dinner. Our thanks go to both parents and teachers who contributed.

“Be Kind to Animals” Week was special at Hamilton School. The Humane Society spokeswoman came to talk to our primary classes. A movie was shown and a discussion on the care of pets and wild animals was held. A hall bulletin board was made to emphasize the idea.

Field Day was held May 17 in the Hamilton School yard. The upper grade students exhibited their skills. The physical education skills were the softball throw, yard jump, running relays, 50 yard dash and the 600 yard run. The entire school cheered the participants along.

Ms. Jackson’s choir is practicing to sing for the 8th grade graduation. Their spring performance was so successful we’re sure our graduation will be extra special with this talented group accompanying the ceremony.

After working on Nutrition Units, the classes of Mrs. Hardeman, Ms. Satz, and Mrs. White made their own meals. They applied their knowledge of the 4 basic food groups in planning their meals.

Mrs. Hardeman’s class chose to prepare lunch. Their menu consisted of hot dogs and buns, pork and beans, fruit cocktail, chocolate chip cookies and milk.

Ms. Satz’s class made breakfast. On their menu they had scrambled eggs, toast, butter and jelly, juice, milk and a doughnut.

Mrs. White’s students all brought different vegetables and made a vegetable soup. All three classes enjoyed their units’ culminating activity.

The primary grades are enjoying spring’s final arrival. Field trips are going on in all grades. Room 114, 116 and 119 visited Grant’s Farm and had a picnic lunch at Forest Park. Room 120, 121 and 117 are planning the same trip!

Another good time was spent by Rooms 117, 114, 119, 121, and 120 when they went to see “Pete’s Dragon,” a fantastic Disney film!

A bake sale was held this month, sponsored by the second grade. The proceeds will help pay for a bus, which will take the students to “The Dental Health Theater” on Laclede’s Landing. The students will be seated on “tooth stools” while their presentation is held.

Various rooms are planning to take a long walk and spend the day at the zoo and picnic at Forest Park. We all plan to attend Hamilton School’s picnic June 8, also in the park.

The Hamilton School staff wishes everyone a very happy summer vacation!
