Neighborhood School News

May 1977

From The Times Archives

The parents of Neighborhood School have voted to purchase a one-story apartment building at 5960 McPherson and convert it into a school building for sometime during the 1977-8 school year. A contract is now being negotiated with the owner of that building.

At the Co-ordinating Committee meeting on April 18, Dave Schmidt, fund raiser for the school, announced the following news: the Neighborhood School has received donations from the Old Newsboys Fund for equipment purchase, the Sisters of Loretto and Episcopal Bishops’ Fund for scholarships, and the Beaumont Foundation for this 76-77 year of a teacher’s salary. He also received special grants to enable him to attend a grant-raising technique seminar to be held the week of April 17-20 in Chicago. This good news was offset by the prospects of raising $5,000 down payment on the school building, but if the Flea Market and post- Flea Market Rummage Sale on May 21 are very successful, some progress toward that goal will be made. A special down-payment Fund Drive is underway.

A new, descriptive brochure is now available describing Neighborhood School, its philosophy and educational policy.

Applications for the three available teaching positions have been received and are being reviewed. Anyone interested in teaching at the school on a flexible time basis must apply immediately, as the decision on teachers is imminent.

Enrollment for the 1977-78 school year is open.

Applications for children from 2-12 are available at the School, 6199 Waterman, or at Grace and Peace, Des Peres and Kingsbury. Tuition is $540- 600 for a full day program. Scholarship aid is available. There are approximately ten places available. The School administration is Dana Templeton and her number at school is 725-4620.
