Exercise in Futility

November 1973

Two recent events, the gas station shutdown and the Veiled Prophet parade and all of its trappings, which were propogated by the few, seem to be ignored by the many.

I would have thought that the V. P. ordeal is irrelevant to the people of today’s social awareness.

But where were these socially aware people when 800 gas station owners closed their businesses in protest because they were being squeezed out of their profits by the Price and Wage Controls and the oil kingdom?

They were filling up at one of more than 800 gas stations that remained open, scared out of their Oldsmobile that they might have to take a bus to work.

When so much money is spent for the purpose of promoting the illusion of social prestige, and nobody else cares, it’s a waste. When so much money is lost because people who work hard for a living are cheated out of a decent profit, and nobody cares, it’s sad.
