Community Organizing

A New Matrix

June 1973

From The Times Archives

For two years now Matrix has existed in the S-D neighborhood, at 6149 Pershing, as a Free School for young people of high school age. During this time there have been no students from the immediate neighborhood. The reasons for this may be that we have not made enough effort to inform the community about our school and that our educational orientation may not have been responsive to the needs of the community. We are trying to remedy both of these situations.

Matrix will open in September with Jack Flynn as director. The educational goals for the most part will be completely new. However, our belief in creating a non-authoritarian community, where individuals are free to make their own life decisions and where mutual responsibility is respected remains unchanged. The most significant changes are these:

We ask all who feel that they have a stake in non-public education to explore with us ways in which we can meet your needs.

We offer our tutoring services to those who need them.

All students will be working on the basic skills needed to either acquire a high school equivalency diploma or to pass college entrance exams. Full time students will study a core curriculum centering on humanism and socialism.

There will be no tuition. Money for operating the school will come either from part time jobs of students or by a collective work project.

For further information call Jack Flynn at 726-3012.
