Letter — Handling of Refuse Cans

May 1972

Dear Mr. Ken Cohen:

This is in reply of your letter of March 8, 1972, regarding the complaint relating to the handling of refuse cans by the city refuse collectors.

I can assure you that the collectors servicing this area will be counseled and cautioned about the proper handling of the refuse cans. However, I would like to point out that for safety reasons the men are not permitted to reach into the cans, with their hands, in an attempt to remove the refuse from the cans. Therefore, the only method which is available to assist in removing the material is for the men to “bump” the can in order to loosen the material and allow it to flow from the can, into the truck.

Again, let me say, the men will be told to “bump” the can as gently as possible in order to remove the refuse.

Thank you for your interest in this matter.

Very truly yours, G. Wayne Sutterfield Refuse Commissioner
