Gitana Productions is seeking nominations of ordinary citizens who have bridged connections between Africans and the broader St. Louis community for the prestigious seventh annual “Deeds Beyond Race: Extraordinary/ Ordinary Person of the Year” award. St. Louis is home to upwards of 7,000 to 8,000 Africans from Nigeria, Ethiopia, Kenya and other countries.
In recent years, a large number of refugees have come to St. Louis from Somalia and Liberia.
The “Extraordinary/Ordinary Person of the Year” will be honored at “Complacency of Silence: Darfur,” an original theater performance written by St. Louis playwright Patton Chiles.
The play will use actual words spoken by people involved in the Darfur crisis as well as documented stories for authenticity. Nine performances will be presented at the Saint Louis University Theatre from May 23 through June 8, 2008. “This award recognizes the extraordinary efforts of ordinary people who bridge racial, cultural and religious divides in their day-to-day lives,” said Cecilia Nadal, president of the board of directors of Gitana Productions. “We honor people who really make a difference in our region by helping to bridge gaps that divide us. Gitana is committed to demonstrating the vital connection between global awareness and local humanitarianism.” Nominations should include a one-page essay describing how the candidate voluntarily reaches across ethnic and religious lines with good deeds and why he/she should receive the award. Nomination essays may be sent to Gitana Productions, PO Box 300280, St. Louis, MO, 63130. Visit www.gitana-inc.org. Deadline for entry is February 28, 2008.
