Historical March 1992 article. Dates, prices, services and contacts describe the source period; current availability has not been established.

For Carla Mash, the school year begins with excitement and expectation.

For seven years, she has been a teacher at New City School.

A dynamic person, she is always changing her curriculum and revising her methods.

This year she began teaching thematically and recently began a theme of “Let’s Make a Difference” that helps students understand people of different races and those who are handicapped. One day, she blindfolded her students from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The students really began to understand what it was like to be blind.

According to Headmaster Dr. Thomas Hoerr, Carla Mash is a superb teacher.

He feels that she is the kind of teacher who makes a difference in the lives of her students.

She is always stretching herself for better results and is always growing and learning. Mash grew up in Edwardsville, IL and graduated from Eastern Illinois University.

She goes back to Edwardsville every summer as co-director of a summer computer camp. Petite and friendly and with a ready smile, Mash has a life outside of teaching.

She is co-owner of a duplex on the 60xx block of McPherson with her parents and works very hard on her house.

A nearby neighbor, Dan Schesch, describes her as a good neighbor and a good friend.

He is glad she is on the block.

For fun, Mash plays volleyball and tennis and makes jewelry that she has for sale on consignment at a shop.

She is a member of Union Avenue Christian Church and she and three other members have formed a concert group.

She plays the recorder.

They just had their first performance. Mash also collects decorative plates. Mash’s longtime pet, a dalmatian named Pepper, died recently. Mash misses the dog much but thinks she will look for another soon.

She had liked to dress Pepper up and take her picture.

A photo of Pepper in the driver’s seat of Mash’s car ran on the front page of a Chicago newspaper. Other pictures of Pepper that won prizes include one of Pepper sitting in a boat wearing a life jacket with an American flag in the background and a double exposure showing a giant Pepper looming over a Thanksgiving dinner. Carla Mash participates in SkinkerDeBaliviere neighborhood activities and makes positive contributions to the community. •
