The intent of this column will be to review various and sundry social activities which occur in our area from time to time. It should be understood, unless otherwise noted, that opinions expressed in this column are those of the author. Any comments or responses to this column are welcomed through the “Letters to the Editor” section of The Paper.

FOOD FOR POLITICAL THOUGHT

On September 20, 1975, the Citizens for Schoemehl Committee sponsored a $15 per couple fund-raiser in St. Roch’s Scariot Hall. As has been the case with such affairs, drink and snacks were provided. The exception at this gathering was the hors d’oeuvres — no potato chips and pretzels these. Fresh vegetables, dips, canapes, cheese rolls, and bacon-wrapped water chestnuts. Ah! The bacon-wrapped water chestnuts! Some of the dips left a lot to be desired but the party on the whole provided good food, adequate booze, good companionship, and a good time.

FAMILY POTLUCK

Grace Fellowship was the scene of a family potluck supper on September 24. No frills. No fanfare. Just excellent food which has become the accepted norm in our area. In addition, through the services of a marketing survey, the Neighborhood School raised over $100. A pleasant family outing and the kids still got to bed on time.

CENTURY HEARTBURN

Another visit in Scariot Hall on September 27th proved to be a disappointment. The Century Club held its annual fund-raiser for the benefit of St. Roch’s. The fact that tickets cost each couple a minimum of $33 ($100/ticket) is apparently no deterrent as over one hundred tickets were sold. Cash prizes ranging from $100 to $2000 were awarded totaling about $4000. Given the quality of the booze (rotgut), the lack of quality in the food, and lack of entertainment, we cannot avoid this opportunity to suggest the organizers of future Century Club happenings reduce the quantity of money given away and improve the quality of drink, food, and entertainment.

SOUP

Thick Navy bean soup. Creamy potato soup. Spiked French onion soup. Split pea soup so thick you could eat it with a fork. The bill of fare at the Soup Supper held at the Langes’ on October 5th tasted even better than it sounds and yet, the high point of the evening was provided by singer Lee Nanos, whose final set ran well over an hour simply because of demand. The costs were $5.00 per person and an adequately stocked, but modestly priced bar was also in evidence. The proceeds benefited the Neighborhood School.
