The initial meeting of the expanded Skinker-DeBaliviere Education Committee met at Hamilton School to organize to find more classroom space for the school and to provide supportive services for the school staff.
Approximately 60 people attended the meeting including the principal and approximately 14 teachers. Members of the committee expressed disappointment that more Hamilton parents did not attend, but stated that they were pleased with the high interest in the school shown by the general community.
The meeting divided into two groups to discuss the need for more classroom space at the school and to seek ways to channel community resources into the school.
The group discussing the need for space mentioned the following: seeking additional buildings in the community such as Delmar Baptist, Bettendorf, portable classrooms; using Hamilton on the 12-month basis such as the St. Charles plan; adjusting the school’s boundaries; using split shifts or Saturday classes; busing by family units; publicizing permissive transfers outside the public school system; seeking a community study budget for this district and let parents consider priorities; intervene in the Kinloch suit; file suit against the Board of Education, support the election of Board of Education members by district as is before the State Legislature. It should be emphasized that the group only discussed these items. They did not decide support of them.
The other group discussed the lack of parent participation and one committee plans to get lists of parents and have each member of the committee call six of them to encourage more parent participation. The need for more information on the school and its programs was explained to Mr Cleveland Young, principal. A representative of THE PAPER promised to report current programs at the school in the next issue of THE PAPER. The group also discussed asking the staff of the school to list needs so the group could then begin to look for resources for the school. A committee was formed to begin compiling a list of neighborhood resources for use by the school staff.
The group reconvened as a whole and made plans to meet again in two weeks to begin setting priorities and plans of action.
