June 2000

Historical June–August 2000 article. Dates, prices, services and contacts describe the source period; current availability has not been established.

Events continue apace as Delmar redevelops: 1.

A study to assess the feasibility of having a trolley connect the Delmar Link with the Loop is proceeding. 2.

The St. Louis Design Alliance has virtually completed its renovation of the exterior of the old BiRite/A&P building. Check it out—you won’t recognize It! 3. Former Mayor Freeman Bosley Jr. is a partner in the group that has purchased the old McDonald’s site.

A Big Jake’s Barbecue—a sit-down restaurant—should open there in the fall. 4. Progress on the Pageant: The walls are up and construction proceeds on schedule. Very very thick walls were first seen—these provide the sound proofing for the theatre There’s more late-breaking news: SDCC and its Delmar Commercial Committee have been awarded a $ 10,000 grant from FIRSTAR BANK. Called the “FAN” Grant, for Firstar Advantage Neighborhood, this grant will provide funds for marketing and new banners on Delmar.

The goal of the program is to deliver positive outreach to the North St. Louis community.

As our plans for Delmar have always had the objective of consistent design and use standards— and first class redevelopment—both north and south, east and west, on Delmar, the FIRSTAR program proved a perfect fit!

The grant will be made in August, so look for more details in our next issue.
