Social Security will issue 2.7 million new Social Security cards to children in the next 10 months as the result of a new law. Next year at tax time, the Social Security number of any dependent age two or older must be listed on your tax return.
Before the law was changed, a number was required for dependents age 5 or older. Social Security estimates that about half of the children age two to four don’t have numbers yet.
Because of the large number of applications expected, Social Security is warning parents to apply early.
The usual processing time for a Social Security card is about 10 days but large numbers of applicants waiting until the April 15, 1990 deadline could cause delays. People who wish to apply for cards for their children should call Social Security at 1-800-234-5772. You’ll receive information about the evidence required and an application through the mail.
