Brought Together By Porchfest

November–December 2024

Historical November–December 2024 article. Dates, prices, services and contacts describe the source period; current availability has not been established.

I (Jes) have lived in Skinker DeBaliviere since 2018, but had recently moved to Westminster Pl in 2021 when a friend from church invited me to the neighborhood Porchfest.

Her son was going to be selling beer there from his mobile beer truck: “Beer Outside”.

I didn’t really know anyone in the neighborhood yet and was apprehensive to go.

But I really liked my friend and thought hey, “support local”, right?! So I went up to Four Corners, planning to meet my friend there.

But upon arriving I realized she wasn’t there.

As I didn’t know anyone there (which is a rookie mistake at a social gathering), and was contemplating leaving, my friend’s son, Luke, the guy from the beer truck, came up to me and asked if I was waiting for his mom and said I’d just missed her, she’d already gone home. “But” he said, “come on up to the beer truck, I’ll buy you a beer.” I then proceeded to spend the next hour at his truck just talking with him (granted it had started to rain, so really I had nowhere else to be).

But eventually I had to get going and he asked for my phone number.

A couple of weeks later we met up at the neighborhood Kaldi for coffee and he essentially proposed to me (but that’s another story). Six months later we were engaged, and nine months later were married.

Now three years after that fateful Porchfest, we have just had our first baby, Eleanor Louise, born October 15, weighing 8lbs 2oz. We’ve loved our time in Skinker DeBaliviere and have felt so supported and cared for by our neighbors through both the journey of marriage and now becoming parents.
