Matt Boxdorfer of the 61XX block of Kingsbury received a great honor in April, being inducted into the 50th Class of the St. Louis Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame. Matt was a righthanded pitcher for Saint Louis University from 1984 to 1987 and competed against several players who ended up playing in the major leagues, including striking out Pete Incaviglia.
He also played for the Sotolar Pointers in the CYC Senior Men’s League in 1985 and 1988, played for St. Louis Metro Collegiate League for Centerre Bank in 1986 and Interco in 1987 He was selected to the Metro Collegiate all-star team both years.
In more recent years he played for the Sharks from 2003-2012 and has been playing for Bud Light from 2013-2123 but has now also retired from baseball. Congratulations Matt!
We are proud to have a Hall of Famer in the neighborhood.
The induction ceremony took place at the Sheraton Westport Lakeside Chalet Hotel on April 18 and Matt was lucky enough to have many friends and family members in the audience for this special night. Saint Louis University’s School of Education honored Parkview resident, Flint Fowler at their pre-commencement ceremony on May 16th at the College Church with the 2024 Alumni Merit Award.
The award is bestowed on alumni for notable achievements in their profession, community involvement, and dedication to a life that embodies the Saint Louis University mission. Flint has been the longtime leader of the Boys & Girls Club of Greater St. Louis (formerly Herbert Hoover Boys & Girls Club) and recently announced he will be retiring at the end of 2024. St Roch had its last graduation ceremony of the eighth-grade class due to the closing of the school by the Archdiocese of St. Louis.
This was a significant accomplishment for the students yet a very bittersweet day for the parish and neighborhood. Congratulations to the graduates and we are so excited to see your accomplishments and follow along your bright futures!
The McGroarty family of the 6100 block of Kingsbury has had an epic month of graduations and celebrations! First off, number two son, Brendan, graduated from Regis University in Denver with a degree in Communications and a minor in Peace and Justice. Gertrude (Gertie) McGroarty, the only daughter of Sean and Cristina (who keeps five brothers in line) graduated eighth from Visitation Academy where she will also attend high school. And her twin brother graduated in the final graduating class of St. Roch and will be attending Saint Louis University High School. And somehow with everything else she does, Cristina McGroarty, who teaches in the Trudy Busch Valentine School of Nursing at Saint Louis University received her Doctor of Philosophy in Higher Education from Saint Louis University. Cristina’s dissertation was on The Lived Experience of Jesuit Baccalaureate Nursing School Graduates Meaning Making of Their Professional Practice.
It truly was an epic month for the McGroarty family! Well done!
Gene Gladstone of the 61XX block of McPherson see painting his seasonal mural on the front of his house, ready for Spring!
