Joe’s Café Reopens

After a 3-month break due to zoning issues, The beloved Joe’s Cafe music venue announced on Facebook it has received the proper occupancy and consumption liquor licenses needed to reopen. Joe’s said the venue will be limited to 99 people inside and 25 in the summer garden.

In January, St. Louis officials said the venue didn’t have enough parking and wasn’t zoned correctly. Though Joe’s Café is zoned for residential use, the city gave the space an exception when it opened in the 1980s at 6014 Kingsbury Avenue.

But now, with events, concerts and an outside garden, the city said it needed another variance to continue operating.

In February the city’s Board of Adjustment approved a variance that allowed Joe’s Café to continue business after a hearing that showed much support from the neighbors and artists with in-person and written statements submitted.

The city did add stipulations: Concerts must end by 10:30 p.m., the venue has to close by 11 p.m. and organizers must ensure customers don’t park on Kingsbury Avenue.
