How are we holding up neighbors?

I truly hope that you are all doing okay; physically, mentally, and emotionally.

My May column was a long one as we celebrated so many of our neighborhood graduates.

This column, is a little shorter, as it seems so many of us are more focused on being at home. Life is definitely different in 2020. But, I also know that being home has inspired some people to take on new projects or hobbies, so maybe for the next issue, you can share with us some of what you have done. What big (or little) projects have you taken on? Any new hobbies; baking, biking, sewing, or others?

I would love to hear from you and share it with our neighbors. Michael Holohan, of the 6000 block of Westminster, has retired from 20 years of teaching in the atelier at St. Michael School and more than 25 years working in an approach to learning which originated in Reggio Emilia, Italy. He’s converted the family room of his home into a studio, complete with a printing press and a number of projects already underway. Michael has also recruited Rhea, his studio assistant (pictured with him), to join him in retirement. Both Rhea and Michael miss the students very much, but the time was right. Michael looks forward to volunteer teaching opportunities, some delayed home improvement projects, making art, and has renewed his fishing license.

Some of you may remember reading about the adventures of Claire Rater while serving in the Peace Corps in Africa. Claire’s visit was cut short due to Covid19 and she has now moved to Juneau, Alaska as an AmeriCorps volunteer. Claire will be doing something in public health, helping with access to health care.

Her roommates are also evacuated peace corps volunteers but from other countries in Africa.

She will be there for one year and then plans on going to graduate school in public health. Claire is the oldest daughter of Dan and Molly Rater of Kingsbury Square.

Another St. Roch and Rosati Kain alum is also serving in Americorps this year. Sarah Cross is headquartered in Vicksburg, MS, where she just completed eight weeks of leadership training and has started her first assignment with her team in Norton, VA. Sarah will lead a team of nine that are cleaning waterways and trail building in a 1,000-acre recreational facility.

This will be the first of four remote assignments for Sarah’s team. Sarah is the daughter of Andy and Linda Cross of the 6000 block of McPherson. Knee Deep Bad Jokes – Terry Vanicelli of the 6200 block of Washington in Parkview reports that he had knee replacement surgery in July and that he was “knee deep in bad jokes”.

Some examples of Terry’s humor, he tried to comfort the prep nurse who had trouble finding a blood vessel for the drip by telling her he would stick with her and singing his version of Carly Simon’s song, “You’re No Vein”. Terry is doing well with his recovery.

On a sad note, Darryl Richardson of the 6100 block of McPherson passed away on July 24.

His son Darius shared that there was a virtual Memorial Service for Darryl on Friday, August 7. Our condolences go out to his son and entire family. Do you have news to share?
