St. Roch Troop Ninety-Eight — A Busy Summer

Historical September–October 2017 article. Dates, prices, services and contacts describe the source period; current availability has not been established.

Five scouts from Troop 98, based at St. Roch Church, joined eight other scouts from three other units in St. Louis for a week of camp at S-F Scout Ranch (near Farmington, MO) in July. S-F Scout Ranch features a 270 acre lake for boating, fishing, and swimming.

The scouts did plenty of swimming during one of the hottest weeks of the summer! One of the high points of the week was time at the water park with a Zip line and rope swing out into the water.

In addition to swimming, the scouts had a chance to shoot rifles and bows.

They earned merit badges in subjects ranging from Lifesaving to Leatherworking and Woodcarving to Chess, and even Moviemaking, for which the scouts produced a short film. Cooking was done in camp over charcoal burners. Scouts learned to make omelettes in a zip lock bag and cooked jumbalaya for dinner.

While tents were available, some of the scouts slept in hammocks under the stars. Troop 98 is based at St. Roch Church and school.

The Troop meets every Wednesday evening. For more information on Troop 98, you can contact Paul Winter at (314) 962-3377.
