Americans tend to participate less in major elections than their counterparts in other democracies. Perhaps we have too many elections or perhaps the increasing negativity of political campaigns disheartens some. Politics seems to be sport for the few but it should not be. Many programs, policies and appointments depend on who gets elected to office.
In August, we have an important primary–for federal and state offices. Since St. Louis City is overwhelmingly Democratic, it is the primary that will determine who are congressman is, who are state representative is and will determine who seeks state office in November.
There are several hotly contested races. Two sitting congressmen face each other to represent Missouri’s first district (thanks to redistricting). Four candidates are seeking to be state representative for the 84 district (which includes the whole neighborhood). And, four also seek to be Treasurer of the city.
On the first Tuesday in August, remember to vote.
If you are going to be away, you can vote at your convenience at the Board of Elections. And, if you’re not registered to vote, you can register at the Charing Cross Library, now located on Delmar at the corner of Rosedale.
If we don’t participate, who can we blame?
