Pumpkin Contest

By Becky Homan

Historical Summer 2009 article. Dates, prices, services and contacts describe the source period; current availability has not been established.

June is not too late to think about direct-sowing the pumpkin seeds that, next fall, could win you fabulous prizes from Bowood Farms garden center, 4605 Olive Street in the Central West End! Bowood announces its first-annual, pumpkin-growing contest!

It is open to home gardeners, community gardeners, children, school groups – to anyone who’s growing their own pumpkins for private use.

The six categories in this contest are: (1) Best Overall Pumpkin; (2) Largest Pumpkin; (3) Smallest Pumpkin (at maturity); (4) Best Pumpkin Grown by a Child (12 and under); (5) Best Pumpkin Relative (melon, squash or gourd); (6) Goofiest Pumpkin (“pumpkins with possibilities” – such as celebrity look-a-likes, or spooky faces, or just supremely odd and wacky shapes). Find an entry form and contest guidelines at www.bowoodfarms.com by going to Calendar of Events and scrolling down to Oct. (when prizes will be awarded). Or visit the store for an entry form, or call Bowood at 314-454-6868 with any questions.
