Editor’s Notebook — Our Changing Neighborhood

Summer 2009

From The Times Archives · Originally published Summer 2009

Historical Summer 2009 article. Dates, prices, services and contacts describe the source period; current availability has not been established.

Our neighborhood has become stronger and more vibrant as the years have passed. Yet, we should not be too sanguine.

We have to continue to protect ourselves against crime, block by block. Keep eyes open, watch the street traffic, watch where you are headed.

If an incident should ever occur, work with neighbors, the SDCC, and the police so that order can be properly restored. Never leave anything of value in your vehicle. Be alert. By these remarks, I do not mean to infer that we are experiencing a rash of crime; we are not. But, it’s never too late to work with your neighbors to make our environment even safer. One thing that helps to demonstrate Skinker DeBaliviere’s vibrancy is the number of walkers on the streets–during the day and the evening.

There seem to be more families with babies and lots of people with their best canine friend. University students also add to the mix.

This kind of presence is a deterrent to crime and has certainly increased over the last 20 years. Don’t forget the Garden Tour, Dog Show, National Night Out and our own Times Party! Happy summer.
