The US Soccer Foundation and its official national partner for goals, nets, field equipment and mobile seating, “Kwik Goal,” have awarded funding to the City of St. Louis for new soccer goals for Lucier Park. Dan Skillman, Director of Parks, Recreation and forestry, said, “These new goal posts will greatly reduce our installation time and present a professional look to the existing field at Lucier Park.” For the past two years, soccer teams from St. Roch’s have used the park as their practice field. Third grade coach Joe Gudiswitz, whose team practices at the park, “playing a team sport not only develops athletic skills, but also imparts character-building qualities like team work, camaraderie and a positive attitude – we feel these are important values to teach to young people – regardless of whether they attend the school.” Neighborhood resident and parent Ligaya Figueras, one of the primary supporters involved in obtaining this grant, was quoted in the foundation’s feature story in their newsletter, “– people are helping on landscaping plans, figuring tree, shrub and flower plantings, re-sizing the soccer field, redoing the baseball diamond and fixing up the baseball benches. None of these developments would be happening without the Foundation.”
