Editor’s Notebook — Diversity, Vigilance And Metro Construction

By Lana Stein

Historical February–March 2005 article. Dates, prices, services and contacts describe the source period; current availability has not been established.

In my last missive, I mentioned the changing character of our neighborhood.

A higher percentage of residents than before have not lived here during the more difficult days of the 1970s and early 80s nor have participated in activities designed to revivify the neighborhood. Our celebration of our diversity and the achievement of stability amidst that diversity was once a quite unique achievement. Things never stay the same but it is hoped, at least by this writer, that somethat some of our values and concerns will remain paramount. That requires vigilance and involvement.

Residents need to know about developments that affect them and have a chance to react.

We won’t always agree but, hopefully, we will come together to protect the very special living space we share.

As you may remember, Alderman Krewson worked with some of us to mitigate the effects of Metro construction along the Forest Park Parkway on the neighborhood.

We do have fewer dirthauling trucks traversing our neighborhood and the trucks aren’t passing by schools or along the most narrow thoroughfares. That doesn’t mean things are perfect.

The dust has been overwhelming.

Some trucks still go by uncovered and adherence to the judge’s directive is not 100%. And somedays the noise is penetrating.

The good news is that this all should be over at some time this year and we can get our parkway back as well. Let’s hope this time passes quickly and without incident.
