MacroSun Events

By Gil Williams

Historical Winter 2003 article. Dates, prices, services and contacts describe the source period; current availability has not been established.

Gil Williams of MacroSun writes, “It’s great to be in the Skinker-DeBaliviere neighborhood; the neighborhood support and kindness have meant a great deal to us.” Many events are being planned at the shop on Delmar, across from the Pageant. November 15, watch or participate in Mehindi, the ultimate body art/temporary tattoo using the organic Indian herb Henna to draw intricate designs on hands and feet, is offered free with $10 purchase at MacroSun November 15, 2-4 pm (and every 3rd Saturday of the month) by Mehindi artist, Mamta Thakkar.

The natural henna creates a temporary stain of deep reddish-brown to black, and has been used in India for centuries to celebrate festive occasions, such as weddings. “MacroSun is also planning a number of intercultural Himalayan holiday festivities in the first few weeks of December – which will likely include a live sitar concert, possibly Kurdish music also, the free henna body art, and we will give it our best shot to get the Baby yak (or some friendly petting zoo animal) for the kids to pet. We’ll also be uncrating major new shipments of Buddhist and Hindu bronze statues from India and Nepal; Afghan hats, tribal jewelry, and antique textiles; Tibetan yak wool sweater and jackets; and lots of new sterling jewelry from Thailand, India, and Bali.

All our holiday customers get a free gift!” In other MacroSun news, Dr. Christine Schutz of MacroSun left October 24 for 3 weeks in Nepal to work with our sister organization,”Mitrata Nepal” (“Mitrata” means “Friendship” in Nepali), which operates a children’s home/orphanage in Nepal that provides educational opportunities and a safe and loving home for abandoned and street children in Nepal.

There are now over 20 children in the home individually sponsored, mostly by donors in the St. Louis area. MacroSun International is planning a major buying trip early next year.

It should include India, Indonesia, and possibly Iraq.

We are looking into trade and security issues of working with local Iraqi artisans – which are known for their beautiful traditional textiles, jewelry, and artwork.
