This year, the SDCC MLK Day Program, held on January 26, 2003, was entitled “The Vision of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., As Lived by Greg Freeman”. Held at New Cote Brilliante Church of God, the program’s speakers were welcomed by New Cote Brilliante’s Rev. Miki Merrit and Grace United Methodist Church’s Pastor, Rev. Mary Harvey. Speakers included Lorraine Kee, Post-Dispatch columnist and reporter and long-time friend of Greg’s; Emmanuel Kintu, from the Bridges Across Racial Polarization program co-founded by Greg; and Dan Schesch (shown here), who founded the Bridges program with Greg.

They also served on the Skinker-DeBaliviere Community Council together, as did speaker Lana Stein, TIMES co-editor and Professor of Political Science at UMSL.

Also featured was Liz Johnson, from the Herbert Hoover Boys and Girls Club, and daughter of Jack Wright, President of SDCC for many years in the 60’s and 70’s, and who began this outstanding tradition in the neighborhood.

The New Cote Brilliante Church Choir and St. Roch School, led by Regina Morris, also performed, and Mary Edwards from Grace Church played the flute. Shown here, the Carr Lane Visual and Performing Arts Middle School students also participated in the 2003 program.
