At its June meeting, the SDCC Board voted to go ahead with exterior code enforcement for the Skinker DeBaliviere neighborhood.
This last occurred ten years ago. City inspectors will examine the exterior of all residential units at a date to be set by the Council in July.
The inspectors will be looking at gutters, chimneys, rooves, painting, and tuckpointing. in the case of the latter two items, at least 10% of the work must need repair to be cited.
The rationale for this enforcement is that almost all buildings in the neighborhood are almost 100 years old.
To ensure the neighborhood’s stability and increased viability, the buildings must be preserved.
The Council recognizes that code enforcement may cause considerable anxiety. Well before the starting date, public meetings will be held to acquaint residents with the nature of the inspections and the compliance required.
The process to request extensions will be highlighted.
In addition, the Council is preparing packets for residents that will further explain the procedure, provide information about reduced-interest loans for those with lower incomes, and introduce the possibility of receiving credits on state income tax for repairs that are undertaken.
The Council will flyer the neighborhood about the meetings on code enforcement, assemble lists of possible contractors, and also set up special meetings with specific block units.
The enforcement will not begin before the spring of 2001. For questions, contact Laure at the SDCC, 862-5122.
